About the Name
Code named “Midnight” by Underground Railroad “conductors,” Detroit provided access to Canada.... and freedom, for formerly enslaved people in the 1800's. Following the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, Canada became the ultimate goal for many freedom seekers and thus Detroit, by geographical location proximity.
