About the Name

Beaver Island was colonized primarily by Irish Catholic
immigrants and a unique sect of Latter-Day Saints who called themselves the
Strangites. After years of descent between the 2 groups, the Strangites dissipated
with the death of their leader. More Irish immigrants arrived. Because of the
isolation of Beaver Island, a unique Irish identity formed that is still
present today.

Beaver Island is known mostly for its beaches, forests,
recreational harbor and seclusion.
