Simple Syrup Made Simple

How to make THE BEST simple syrup in 3 easy steps!

INGREDIENTS

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup water

How to make simple syrup

  1. Combine Ingredients: Combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan.

  2. Heat and Dissolve: Heat over medium heat. Simmer, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves completely. Do not boil.

  3. Cool and Store: Remove from heat and allow the syrup to cool completely before transferring to an airtight container and storing in the refrigerator.

Variations

  • Different Sugars: Experiment with different types of sugar like brown sugar, demerara sugar, or honey for varying flavors and colors.

  • Rich Simple Syrup (2:1 Ratio): For a thicker, sweeter syrup, use two parts sugar to one part water. This is often preferred by bartenders for its ability to add more body to cocktails and extend the shelf life due to its higher sugar content.

  • Flavor Infusions: Simple syrup can be easily infused with various flavors by adding ingredients like herbs (mint, basil, rosemary), spices (cinnamon stick, vanilla bean), or citrus zest during the heating process or while cooling. Let the chosen ingredients steep as the syrup cools for optimal flavor infusion.

Tips

  • Simple Syrup is made with equal parts granulated sugar and water. The amounts can be increased or decreased depending upon how much you'd like to make.

  • Store this homemade simple syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a month. Flavor infused syrups may not last as long, while rich simply syrups will last up to 6 months.

Simple syrup is a convenient and versatile ingredient that elevates cold brewed and iced tea. Making it at home is a simple process, allowing for easy customization and delicious results.
