Iced Tea Fun Facts & Brewing Tips

Welcome to June and all it brings! The end of the school year, the official first day of Summer, and National Iced Tea month!

To kick off National Iced Tea month, I'd like to share a few fun facts:

  • The origins of Iced Tea can be traced to the early 1800s when it was served with liquor as a sort of boozy punch.

  • Iced Tea as we know it today was introduced to the masses at the 1904 world’s fair.

  • During prohibition, iced tea was served as a substitute for hard liquor.

  • In the U.S., 85% of all tea consumed is iced tea.

  • Like hot tea, iced tea is rich in antioxidants,

  • Iced tea is a great source of hydration, helping to quench thirst and replenish fluids.

Just like hot tea, Iced Tea can be prepared using different brewing methods. The common ones being basic hot-to-cold, cafe method, and cold brew. Each of these brewing methods can produce slightly different results from the same tea leaves. The right brewing method for you comes down to personal preference. Much like what teas you enjoy. My daughter, Georgiana, loves Shipwreck Alley Strawberry – cold brewed. It’s also one of my favorites, along with Rosie and Traverse City Cherry.

To learn more about Iced Tea preparation methods check out my previous blogs, How to make Tea-rrific Iced Tea and All About Cold Brew.

I invite you to celebrate National Iced Tea month by finding your favorite iced teas and ways to prepare them.

Happy STEAPing,

Samantha
